What is Financial Abuse? 

Refers to one the action of one partner in a relationship forcing the other to continue giving them all their money and savings. They tend to try and control how the money is spent from both people in the relationship. 

What are the types of Financial Abuse? 

Financial Abuse can be shown through one partner trying to take control of the money situation in the relationship. 

Signs that you are in a Financially Abusive relationship 

Your partner will be:

  • Trying to control your use of or access to money you have earned or saved 
  • Taking the money and using credit cards without permission 
  • Demanding to know all your passwords to bank accounts etc. 

Always Remember! 

  • You do not have to give away your money to your partner 
  • If you've worked for the money, it is yours! 
  • You are not alone in this situation 

What to do next? 

  • Speak to someone, find help right away 
  • There are many organizations who can help with "short-term loans" 
  • Getting a protection order may be necessary

  • Only 1 in 24 cases are reported on Financial Abuse 
  • 1 in 10 adults over the age of 60 are abused, neglected or financially exploited 
  • 42% of abusers live with their victim (46% are female and 54% are male)
